I just saw an image of the Imagine memorial in central park.
And I was reminded of when I went to NYC, and the days I spent wandering around shooting photos.
It took me awhile to take a photo of the Imagine monument when I walked through Central Park, as I had to wait. It upset me to see all the people who ran up sat on it, and had smiling photos taken by their friends....
I wanted to take a photo of it alone, and people kept jumping onto it.
I felt small leaving a flower on it, as it was the only one. But it felt right to leave it there. More so than the witnessing the hordes of tourists that had to have a photo of themselves there, as if to prove that they were in NYC and in central park...
It's funny, I was a tourist, but I never felt like one. I didn't do many touristy things. I passed up going to the world trade center's view deck, thinking to do it some other time (Only to have it collapse almost a month from when I was there), the closest I got to the Statue of Liberty was taking the Staten Island Ferry out and back. I stalked through Times Square just to get on the subway (as it was the closest entrance). In honesty, I felt more like an art student wandering around taking pictures of everyday life in the city than a tourist. In fact, I even had a very enlightening conversation with another photographer about hand held light meters while waiting for the train to take me up to the area around the Guggenheim museum (which I also didn't make it to sadly enough).
The funny thing about that is that I did the same here in Chicago and in Champaign when I had a camera.
I want to go back to NYC, to spend another day wandering though Central Park. There is so much to see there, and I know I only hit a small section of the park (I didn't make it into the further wilder reaches. I want to run around and take more photos of people dancing to a busker in the subway (as we don't ever seem to get dancers to buskers in the CTA tunnels, unless they are part of the busking group, at least not when I have a camera). I want to record people running for trains, and carrying their toy poodles in baby carriers across the street. I want images of interesting pieces of architectures, and so much more.
I want to do this in all the places I visit. I am hoping that C10 gets voted for Chicago, so I can re-find the city I grew up in while showing it off to people I haven't seen in years.

on 2003-07-28 05:39 pm (UTC)I think I'd like to go to NYC sometime.. Maybe just to say I've been there. *L* And if I do go, I could visit Colonel Mustard. How far we are all scattered!
